Screen Two at 40

Launched by the BBC in 1985 as a successor to Play for Today, Screen Two featured an eclectic range of over 150 single dramas, including The Firm, Edward II, Priest, Contact and Truly, Madly, Deeply. On the occasion of its 40th anniversary, the Centre for the History of Television Culture and Production has been collaborating with both the BBC and BFI  to make its achievements better-known and to assess its artistic and industrial legacy. As part of her AHRC-funded Collaborative Doctoral Award with the BBC, PhD researcher Lillian Crawford has curated an overview of Screen Two for BBC Canvas (which is due to launch shortly).  BBC4 has also begun a series of Screen Two productions, including The Firm, Brothers in Trouble and Sweet As You Are, which may be viewed on BBC iPlayer. The BFI and the TV Centre are also co-hosting a symposium on Screen Two at BFI Southbank on 12 November 2025 that will bring together television professionals and academics to discuss the contribution and legacy  of Screen Two. This will be accompanied by a screening of Priest, which is due to be released by the BFI as a Blu-ray with notes by Lillian. Lillian’s blog on Screen Two may also be found on the Forgotten Television Drama website.
