Helen Littleboy’s new two-part documentary series Inside the Cult of the Jesus Army launched on BBC Two on 27th July, subsequently becoming available on BBC iPlayer.
Helen, who lectures at Royal Holloway and is a TV Centre associate, is the executive producer of the programmes which explore how a tiny, idealistic Christian commune, founded in the 1970s, grew into a radical national evangelical movement, attracting thousands of members. In the films, a group of survivors receive post-cult therapy as they expose a story of oppression and abuse, the scale of which is only now coming to light.
The first film in this series was selected for preview at Sheffield International Documentary Festival where a public screening, including former members of the Jesus Army, was followed by a Q&A.
Earlier in the year, Helen Littleboy also obtained a doctorate for her thesis, “Reframing Authorship: British Television Documentary in the Digital Age”.
